Buzzard Roost Nature Preserve

Buzzards Roost by Mark Brown

Located in Ross County, the 1300-acre Buzzard Roost Nature Preserve has two overlooks that many consider to be some of the best in all of Ohio. The park has one of the most rugged landscapes in all of Ohio, with its highest point being over 600 feet above its lowest point! Buzzard's Roost borders the beautiful gorge of Paint Creek and views of the gorge can be seen by hiking the preserve's South Point Lookout Trail.

Trails:
South Point Lookout Trail:
Length: 1.5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Description: This trail takes you to the South Point Overlook, which takes in the dramatic Paint Creek Gorge. The trail parallels the edge of the gorge for a majority of the hike and a short spur trail can take you to the seasonal Blueberry Falls.

Hoggard Trail:
Length: 1.3 miles (one way)
Difficulty: Strenuous
Trail Description: The Hoggard Trail takes you up to Buzzard Roosts best overlook. The trail runs a former road that was closed down during the Great Depression due to lack of traffic and passes by the remains of the old Hoggard Homestead. The overlook looks down on the North Fork Creek valley.

Greenbrier Trail:
Length: .6 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Trail Description: Short trail through the woods that shares the trail with the Hoggard Trail for roughly half of the hike.

Address: Red Bird Lane, Chillicothe, Ohio
